Dreamy Pool, 42" x 42"

His highly atmospheric pool paintings are at once serene and yet ethereal, with an undeniable sense of mystery that hints at an unknowable narrative. Malcolm is a keen fan of Edward Hopper’s paintings and notes that the artist reflects our lived experience by offering us glimpses of people and places which suggest a story that has gone before or might be about to unfold. Hoping to emulate that same feeling, he sees this particular series of works as way of provoking the viewer’s imagination. Figures appear only fleetingly if at all yet somehow the air of anticipation and theatricality remains, with each image feeling rather like a minimalist stage set where anything could happen once the players arrive.
